This £22m scheme included a new Metro rail station and 14-bay bus terminal, the decommissioning of the existing transport services, upgraded public realm and wider highways improvements. The project formed part of the South Shields Masterplan, which is a joint venture between Muse Developments and South Tyneside Council.
This major development sits within the heart of the town centre and was constructed on the site of a former Post Office, close to existing buildings. In addition, there were many highways interface issues, including operational bus movements and traffic flows, heavy pedestrian footfall and annual events that relied heavily on the continued operation of the existing infrastructure.
Key to the successful delivery of the scheme was the development of the brief, in conjunction with all stakeholders, and the detailed investigations into the site and underground services.
