The new headquarters facility brings charity staff, crew, helicopter and critical care cars under one roof for the first time. It also provides a space for the charity to host fundraising events, visits for former patients, school pupils, volunteers and fundraisers to see how their support if making a difference.
The project includes a new heli-pad, funded by the HELP Appeal – the only charity in the country dedicated to funding heli-pads for NHS hospitals and AA bases. The heli-pad features state-of-the-art infrared landing lights, specialised reinforced concrete and composite radar friendly fencing. A new hanger capable of housing and maintaining two helicopters was provided. All air side and charity staff are located within the facility, LNAA now have the capacity to host training events for crew whilst also providing break out space along with overnight accommodation.
The project had various challenges to overcome during construction, principally down to the location on a greenfield site, with no existing infrastructure or statutory services. Located opposite an operational RAF base, the building and site layout had to be adapted to suit MOD requirements due to the potential for radar and operational disruption from the works.
